I think anyone who has ‘visited’ the orchards in town should thank their stars that they weren’t around in 1870 when four local youths (under sixteen) were caught stealing fruit from the Earl of Lucan’s orchard which was apparently located up in the Lawn. To make an example of them and to send a message out to others, they were sentenced to a fortnight’s hard labour in Castlebar Gaol (where the hospital is today). Hard labour meant the children had to work up to ten hours daily, alongside adults doing punishment such as breaking stones or shot drill where prisoners had to lift a heavy iron cannon-ball, bringing it up slowly until it was on a level with their chest, then carry it a measured distance (usually 3 steps to the right), put it down move back three paces and repeat the task with another one. This was back breaking stuff and if this wasn’t bad enough, all prisoners could be put on a tread wheel or treadmill (like a gerbil) walking in silence, on and off for breaks for up to ten hours. Different times indeed.
