Dr P.C. Bresnihan, a Limerick man was appointed Mayo County Surgeon in 1941. He succeeded Dr. Anthony MacBride (uncle of Sean MacBride, Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1974) and a condition of his appointment from Mayo County Council was that he was to be let 3 acres of the land attached to the old Infirmary residence at a nominal rent. The Infirmary was located at the Mall (Green) where Mayo County Council’s Headquarters is today. At this stage, the new County Hospital had been built on the Westport Road and opened since 1938 and the old Infirmary building was in a bad state with only one or two rooms habitable. The orchard behind the Green Bay became known to locals as ‘Bresnihan’s Orchard’. Dr Bresnihan retired in 1977 and died in 1988.
