Fire Ash Disposal?

Hello Castlebar. My mum (Mary McDonnell) grew up in Kincon in the 40s/50s. She was wondering how they disposed of the ash from the fire every day. She asked her older brother but he can't remember. How did people dispose of ash in those days?
