Victor's father, Joseph Hugo, was a high ranking officer in Napoleon's army and so moved frequently when commanded. On campaign in Spain, Hugo snr. met and befriended Richard, 2nd Earl of Lucan and his family.
Richard's son, young George Bingham (later 3rd Earl) and young Victor Hugo became friends and in 1825 at the invitation of Richard, Hugo visited Ireland and the Binghams.
