Hi Ada,
From searching the 1901 Census (link here http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001076154/ )
we can see that there is a 20-year-old George Garvey listed as being a resident in Charles Street, Castlebar. His father was a tailor and his mother was a dressmaker, so it looks like he followed the family business!
When you come to Castlebar, you should drop into the library, and you will have an opportunity to search the local newspapers of the time to see if there is any mention of your grandfather or his family members.
From the Registration Office, you should also be able to get a birth certificate and possibly even a marriage certificate for his parents. That office can be contacted through www.registration.ie
best,
Darina
