Castlebar Man at Battle of Waterloo

Posted by Alan King on June 19, 2015 at 14:30:15:

Yesterday, two hundred years ago, on Sunday, 18 June 1815, the Battle of Waterloo was fought near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the Netherlands. An Anglo-allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington beat the French Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte in a Battle which at the end of the day had about 47,000 casualties. One participant in the battle was Castlebar man, Major General George O’Malley (1780–1843), GCB, 88th Regiment who has a memorial erected in the grounds of Christ Church, Castlebar.
He was a volunteer in the Castlebar yeomanry when the town was attacked by the French under Humbert on 27 Aug. 1798 and after he joined the British Army, he quickly rose up the ranks. During the Battle of Waterloo, O'Malley was twice wounded and had two horses shot under him, but did not leave the field (C.B. and medal). He later commanded the Connaught Rangers for a number of years and was buried at Murrisk Abbey.
