Val Doonican and Castlebar

Posted by Alan King on July 02, 2015 at 20:11:09:

The singer Val Doonican who died yesterday started off his singing career with the Stephen Garvey band in the late 40’s/early ‘50’s. He answered an advert in the national papers looking for a drummer/pianist. He stayed in a house on the Station Road and played alongside Joe Chambers of Castlebar. It was a gruelling experience as dances then could go on for up to six hours and no matter where they played, Stephen Garvey always returned home each night to Castlebar. He spent in total about six months before moving on. He was also accorded a Civic Welcome by the local UDC in 1979 when he returned to Castlebar for a charity concert.
