My wife Frances & I have just returned to Canada having spent 5 days in my old hometown of Castlebar. We had a wonderful time and the weather was terrific. During our visit we attended the birthday party of a McHale Road icon, Kevin O'Malley, who has just become an octogenarian. We met many friends at the party. We were made so welcome by one and all. Another highlight of our trip was a celebration at the Mayo Peace park, where my good friend Michael Feeney and Ernie Sweeney honoured us by allowing us to place a wreath at the Canadian monument. This was a very moving ceremony. I have to say that the people of Castlebar should be proud of this Peace Park. Having been to Washington DC and visited the Vietnam and other war monuments, the Castlebar Peace Park is right up there as one of the best. Congratulations to all who assisted in the creation of this memorial dedicated to those Mayo residents who made the ultimate sacrifice in the many wars. I look forward to returning again in the not too distant future.
