I just checked Google streetscape (Sorry cant seem to post a link) and the sign on the main Breaffy Road (N60) at Flaherty Market Electrical still says "Golden Mile Industrial Park"'.

Incidentally, it got me thinking as to how it got its name. As far as I recall, when this stretch of road was upgraded back in 1969, it was obviously such an expensive stretch for the time that it was termed the "golden mile". How times change with CPO's and bypasses.

Interesting enough I was reading a very good book last year by a Tom Garvin on why Ireland was so poor for so long, and in discussing the lack of road investment up to the late 60's, he explained that this was largely due to the strength of the shopkeepers lobby that actively prevented town bypasses. That combined with the fact that the vast majority of civil servants and very many TD's didnt actually drive and so the logic to them was "what's the point or use of of additional roads? Why would they possibly be needed?"
