I have a bit of information regarding the Padden family of Main Street. In September 1912, William Padden and his wife Mary purchased a premises in Main Street from a Pat Doyle and after extensive renovations, opened as an ‘American style Bar and Lunch Rooms’. They also sold tea, eggs and had an undertaking business at the property. William became an Auctioneer and by the 1920’s had the largest auctioneering business in the town. He sold his premises in December 1947 to Michael Murtagh who carried on a pub/grocery type business for a long number of years. Wiiliam retired and died at his residence in Salthill, Co. Galway on May 19th 1960 (his wife Mary died on the 12th Sept. 1933) and both are buried in the old Cemetery, Castlebar. As regards his daughters, his eldest Mary married James W Durcan also from Main Street (Hardware premises across the road) in February 1929. James’ father and brother – both named Thomas were also former Chairmen of Castlebar UDC. Sadly, James died after a short illness in April 1933. I don’t have any more information except that during the 1940’s, Violet was involved with Castlebar Opera Group and sang at a number of variety shows. I hope that fills in a few blank spaces.
