Studying the history of castlebar im more than taken by the records that show that it was governed by people who were or would have been more than happy to stay English. If you look at the streets names the majority are named after our english dominants ,Lucan,Spencer,Richard,Thomas,Charles, Ellison,Tucker,NewAntrim or are diameticly opposed,Staball Rush and after independce Mc Hale,St Patricks,Marion,St Bridgets etc. My thinking is that we ?? would have been happy to stay,or very happy to be part of the British Commonwealth if the merchants of this town had their( when the adult sufferage extended to them and them alone) way.Should this town have as is the case in Ballina all its streets renamed in the nationalistic tradition to Irsh patriots as was agreed back in the 1920s but blocked by her Majestys government. Of course that argument is absurd that we would want to stay British/English but have we failed our kin by not accepting our predeccors wishes.
