Waits appear to be a longstanding English tradition and the word "waits" probably comes from the German word "wahten" meaning "to wake". (Impressed?). In any event, there is a very good website on the whole topic at www.waits.org.uk. In fact, that website has contributions from two distinguished Castebarmen. On a different note, I was surprised that nobody mentioned the article in the Irish Times for DEcember 6, 2003 about teh closure of the hat factory. There was a fine photograph of Tom Ketterick looking hale and hearty and sporting a Castlebar hat. It said that the factory was opened in 1939 and the original employees were Jewish refugees. Anyone remember that? I can't recall any Jewish families in Castlebar in my time and I am almost as old as Tempus. However, altar young persons of our generation will remember Tom Ketterick who, for some reason, always attended mass (first mass at that) in the sacristy
