The grids - thin black boxes - on the maps are exactly one kilometre (0.66 of a mile) from one line to the next both east-west and north-south. That will give you a very easy method to gauge the distance from place to place. I think there's a difference between a road/driving map which tend to be quarter inch or so to the mile and a map of reference which these certainly are.
