I think the Town Hall debates were an offshoot of the Legion of Mary, known as the Patricians. They dealt with religious and non-religious matters, censorship and so on. They were very interesting. I remember John Garavan speaking at one debate. They were a bit like RTE's 'Questions and Answers' but were far more entertaining with no punches pulled. It was a different era and I'm not so sure they would go down well nowadays. But they dealt with relevant matters of the day and created quite a stir locally. Nowadays materialism and greed seem to have take over and we have little time for constructive debate. Corruption and graft seem to be rife; worse still, no one seems to care. Where is this country drifting? Certainly not in the right (and I don't mean the political right) direction.
