Looking at a map of Castlebar from around 1838, I see the area where Scoil Raifteiri is built (old Fairgreen)is called Pigeon Park.
On the map,it's a very large area & it's also interesting to note what appears to be an island just behind Pigeon Park in the land where Riverdale Court is today.It has the beginnings of a classic ox bow lake.There's nothing noted on the island which is not named.This "island" appears in maps 1856/57 but not in 1901 so the land must have been reclaimed/drained.
Has anyone any information on the above items?
