School system : Somewhat similar to nowadays, except most of the teachers back then were members of religious orders, in Castlebar they were in the De La Salle order.Learning involved a lot of committing to memory, as distinct from appreciation. Correct use of language, including a heavy emphasis on grammer, was emphasised. Lots of the subjects were interspersed with the Irish language. Religion was given a high priority.
Wasn't consciously aware about politics at the time except Eamon De Valera was the principal player, along with the Fianna Fail party. Not much change now either, except the personnel have changed.
Music varied from opera to light classical to modern, Irish and foreign.
Don't recall reading many books as a youngster, but comics yes, Hotspur, Victor.
