The land where Dunnes, Tescos, Aldi and other developments have taken place was owned by the Hopkins family, who were prominent in Castlebar many, many years ago. I believe the last remaining member of the family, Dr. Ziggie Hopkins, died in England some years ago. I might be able to dig up more info about the Hopkins family.
