Rush Street is so called because rushes were spread on the road to absorb the droppings of the animals. The same bedding was used in the dungeons of castles in the middle ages for the same purpose, in this case for the unfortunate prisoners who had trespassed againt the whims of their betters.
Another smell from the fair day was that of the moth balls. Large trucks full of clothes used to park and sell the stuff off the back. The reek of moths balls, the stench of droppings, the waft of stale porter and the steam of hot tea - no wonder the ozone layer is the way it is!
