Saturday night last, 23rd. June was bonfire's night. Do you remember the famous bonfires in Castlebar in the early sixties? The main ones I was aware of were always at Mc Hale Road, Staball, Blackfort,Marian Row?, and St. Patrick's avenue. There was a small green area in front of the income tax offices near the Green Bay, which was known as the "green patch" where we used to have our bonfire. Some adults used to be concerned that the flames would sever the overhead cables, but the excitement never went that far!
The town would be littered with fires but nowadays it's quite a different story. I traveled late on Saturday night to Westport and came across just 3 fires, one at Saleen, one at Ballymacragh and one at Westport.
Any other memories of bonfire nights and the parties and fun, and when did bonfires originate?
I think that bonfires night is only celebrated in the West, is that true?
Any bonfires in the Pale or the Kingdom? or even Canada or the States!
