Inkwells have a painfull memory. 1963; 3rd class; ground floor classroom beside the assembly hall. Bro. Phelan is out of his class of 60 charges. There is total bedlam and I am contributing by sliding the brass inkwell cover back and forth at an ever increasing speed when the inevitable happens and the lid cathes the lip of the ceramic well lifting well and contents into the air. Everyone and thing in my vicinity catches a splat of black ink and the scene is the first that Phelan focuses on as he bursts into the room and I pay the price with "six of the best" on the tips of the fingers, barely holding back the tears, embarrassed, numbed hands under the armpits.
He went on to become Head Brother of the Irish Province. I met him in 1988 at the Centenary Celebrations. He did`nt remember the incident. I did`nt mean to embarrass him. He told me we were his first class after he qualified as a teacher.
He was a sound man.
