There is a fort beside Davitt House in Castlebar. This field was originally owned by Tom Clarke and family who lived opposite John Hanley's shop on the Station Road. His daughters, Eileen, and Mrs. Rogan, still live there. There is another fort at the back of Viewpoint. In the past this area was known as Tilbury, perhaps the name of a landlord. There is an area in London known as Tilbury Docks. There is third fort, close to Fortfield on the old Moneen road. I think the proper name for forts is Raths, possibly places of pagan workship. All are preserved and cannot be touched.
