It's named after Sir Richard Bingham.Born in England in 1528,he became a soldier. He was sentenced to death in 1565 when he became involved in a plot to put Mary Queen of Scots on the throne of England.Luckily,he was reprieved & when he was successful in a number of battles,he was appointed Governor of Connaught in 1584.
He was joined by his brothers George & John, who had also being soldiers.John was the one who was granted the Burke Lands in & around C/bar.
He married Sarah Heigham in 1588.His brother George was murdered by supporters of the Burkes in Sligo Castle in 1595 & when he left to travel to London to speak directly to Queen Elizabeth, he was accused of desertion & imprisoned for a few months. His health suffered but the Queen gave him a second chance to prove himself loyal. He set sail with an army to Ireland to suppress the rebellion but due to ill health,he died in Dublin on Jan.19th 1598.
