I remember one story being related many years ago. There was an interesting character from the Newport Road area of town, who was conscious of the lists being read out at Sunday mass, stating those who had paid towards the upkeep of the church and clergy. Not wanting to appear miserly and not have ing any spare cash, he went to the presbytery and asked for a specific priest by name, whom he knew to be sympathetic. This curate was a relatively new arrival to town and did not know the gemtleman in question. Said gent explained that with a large family and many mouths to feed he was temporarily short of a few pounds and could the new priest please oblige and it would be returned within a week. The priest obliged. The man then proceeded to donate the money to the parish priest and was at the top of the list the following Sunday! A short time afterwards, when he met the priest who gave him the money, he told him that he returned it via the collection. When the priest related this story in the presbytery, all of the priests were able to tell him who the "culprit" was, as it wasn't the first time that this trick had been played.
