Polio is now nearly wiped out altogether world-wide. There was, however, a bit of a setback last year when parts of Nigeria banned the vaccine because of rumours that the OPV caused AIDS and made people infertile. Perhaps hundreds of thousands of people who should have been vaccinated were not. Then because of a mass migration from Nigeria from these regions, cases of polio started turning up in a half a dozen neighbouring countries in Africa. Not many cases overall but nonetheless a serious setback to the programme to eliminate polio world-wide.
