Maybe Spiceloft or Butch can tell us a story about the theft of the Irish Crown Jewels around this time 97 years ago. The tale of the seven keys. Sir Arthur Vicars, pilloried and reputation destroyed by Edward VII, who retired to Kerry where he was shot during the War of Independence. Frank Shackleton, homosexual younger brother to Ernest Shackleton, and lover of the Duke of Argyll. The Duke of Argyll, renowned chaser of Guardsmen, who was married to Edward VII favourite sister. Vickers and Shackleton sharing “rooms”. And what was the role of the appropriately named Captain Richard H Gorges?

Is there even a tenuous Castlebar link? William Luke Duffy, Chief Engineer’s Clerk on the Titanic, was born in Castlebar in 1883. He spent two years as a clerk in Shackleton’s Flour Milling Co., Dublin.
