What about Margaret Burke Sheridan ('Maggie from Mayo') who thrilled audiences in La Scala, Milan, Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York? Puccini said her interpretation of the part of Mimi in 'Madam Butterfly' was perfection. The house where she was born on the Mall in Castlebar (owned by the late Dr. Dermot Ryan, optician, one of nature's gentleman) is currently for sale and I hope whoever buys it will call it Sheridan House. It's the least she deserves. We will remember Stephen Garvey, born in Castle Street, Castlebar, opera producer, musician and songwriter later on.
