That's right.Alot of people who went to the cinema down through the years would have gone into Golden's & have known Peggy and the rest of her family.Peggy passed a way a while back but Joe Golden is still going strong. Also, the owner of the pub which burned down was a brother of Senator Sean T.Ruane,Mayo Co.Council.
Also,in light of the fire that occured in Main Street, the fire brigade service back then was wholly inadequate.Reading thru' the newspaper reports,it states that there had been an acute water shortage in Kiltimagh. The waterworks scheme built 40 years earlier provided for about 18,000 gallons per day but in 1944,the estimated daily need was about 30,000 & resulted in frequent water shortages. When the alarm was raised,it was Westport Fire Brigade who came.C/bar Fire Brigade had just returned from a school fire in Belcarra & its members were exhausted. All the water was pumped out of the reservoir in about 20 minutes & the fire still raged. There was nothing they could do but draw water from half a mile away in barrels & throw it on the flames by buckets.
It makes you think & be grateful for the Fire Brigade Service we have today.
