Shell Oil who are currently trying to construct a Gas Terminal at Bellanaboy,North Mayo have been met with objections before to their plans in Mayo,in earlier times.
In 1966,Shell planned to build a motel and ancillary buildings at Maryland,Castlebar & this met with considerable opposition.The Town & the U.D.C. was divided.Up to 20 people would have been employed but because of the adverse publicity,Shell decided against seting up at Maryland.
There was noisy exchanges in the Council chamber with some Cllrs. angry at meetings been held in private & the fact that an objection,signed by 84 garage employees,against the application was handed into the urban Council before anyone knew anything about such an application.Questions & allegations of vested interests flew across the Chamber.Some Cllrs. were angry at false reports that Shell were planning to set up a large salesroom for the sale of all second hand cars in the country & because of that,the Council received alot of signatures protesting against Shell.
