Several Guthrie families in Castlebar for generations. One family were well borers by profession and one of the family was killed around 1900 when the horse, carrying their equipment, 'shied' and the Guthrie man fell into the well. The house was being built for Sir Malachy Kelly, Crown Solicitor, now known as State Solicitors. There is a statue to Sir Thomas Guthrie, educationalist and benefactor, at Princess Street Park in Edinburgh. The Guthries were all great singers and musicians, traits carried on by members of the family to this day. Much more could be written about this fine Castlebar family.
