In light of the anniversary at the moment of the ceasefire in the North, thankfully the ceasefire announced in Castlebar is still in force.
In 1963,the Army authories announced a ceasefire order & ended the target practice shooting at the Military Barracks. The ceasefire order meant that for all rifle & other heavy arms target practice, the members of the army (5th Motor Squadron)would have to travel to Renmore Barracks in Galway. There was mixed feelings in the Town at the time.Residents of Lower Charles Street & Springfield were delighted & had been protesting for a long time about it,particularly against day-long target practice on Sundays. However, local restaurant owners & shopkeepers were furious & felt that the ban would seriously affect their business.
