Posted by Disgraceful Coffins in Castlebar on September 07, 2004 at 16:36:51:

Some older residents of C/bar may remember an incident which made national headlines back in May 1963 regarding sub-standard "coffins" at the County Home (now,Sacred Heart Hospital),Castlebar.
The issue was raised by a Cllr.Tom Giblin at a meeting of Mayo County Council in Castlebar.Mr.Giblin had submitted a notice of motion demanding that "one of the coffins used for burials at the County Home be put on display in the council chamber for all to see".He added that when a corpse was being removed in one of the coffins in Westport,he fell out through the bottom of the coffin.
The County Manager at the time,Liam MacLoughlin denied the allegation & was worried that the remarks would be in the gutter-press of England and the Council would be held up to ridicule.
Cllr. Giblin was adamant and the meeting adjourned admidst rowdy scenes & cries of "Press".
