I hope that former Cllr.Frank Durcan decides to write an account of his time in politics, because it would be a bestseller! One incident which stands out occoured in 1989 when Frank was an independent member of Mayo County Council. The Council were debating a proposal to lease a property in C/bar at a cost of £34,500 per annum, for use as a Library & Museum.Cllr. Durcan was very much against this proposal & attempted a number of times to speak. He was continously ruled out of order by the Chairman,Senator Martin J.O'Toole.
Finally, the Council usher was asked to removed Cllr.Durcan & when he refused to leave,Gardai were summoned.
Three Gardai arrived & removed Cllr.Durcan who straight away entered again via a side door & took refuge amongst the Fine Gael members. The farce continued with laughter and shouting from all sides and then, only in Ireland...Cllr.John Flannery of Fine Gael stood up and burst into song! Two verses of an Irish ballad "The Close of an Irish Day" were given & received a round of applause.
It was after all getting late (9.40 p.m.)in the evening and so there was nothing more to do than adjourn the meeting.
And,to think people laughed at the goings on during Hall's Picturial Weekly during the 1970's.
