Sirens used in various Mayo towns and villages to alert Firemen in event of fires etc from WW11 on--and were property of Fire Service /Mayo County Council. Replaced by other systems to alert firemen but left in place as a back-up system for many years.Phased out completly as they were not required and in any event the noise level was very high;in Castlebar the Court sitting was often disrupted and some Judges became quite irate as they were unable to hear what was being said(many comments in the press during the period)--also woke up half the town when used at night.
