Rotary Club of Castlebar

The Rotary Club of Castlebar is affiliated to Rotary Ireland and Rotary International

The aim of Rotary is “Fellowship and Service”

Fellowship is expressed by regular weekly lunch meetings and other social outings.

Service is expressed under a number of different headings as follows:-

Community Service

Assistance and support for community based groups and organisations and also the needy and less well off. Typically Castlebar Rotary runs fund-raisers for deserving local charities such as St. Vincent de Paul, organises entertainment and outings for residents of the Sacred Heart Home, helps out with meals-on-wheels, Christmas toy appeal, special schools, etc. The projects taken on depend on perceived needs in any given year. Community Service awards are also made to individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to the local community.

International Service

Support and fund-raising for international charities and good causes in third world countries. Current activities internationally include Water-Aid, Jaipur Limbs, Polio-Plus and Sight-Savers. Castlebar Rotary last year filled a number of disaster boxes suitable for sending to major international disaster scenes such as floods or earthquakes. In 1997-1998 the club is concentrating on a fund-raising exercise aimed at providing Aqua-Boxes for Third World Countries where clean water is a scarce commodity. Castlebar Rotary are also supporting the visit of Christina Noble to Castlebar in early March in aid of her Childrens' projects in Vietnam.

Vocational Service

Support for academic projects in the community mainly with schools and youth organisations. Each year Rotary organises “mock interviews” for school leaving students in the town’s schools. Career guidance talks have also been a feature of Castlebar Rotary’s activities in the past. A Youth Leadership competition is also organised for school students in Castlebar and neighbouring towns. Local students have often done well in the past when they have gone on to compete in regional and national competitions.

Rotary Foundation

Foundation is Rotary’s internal charity fund and supports charitable projects with matching grants to help developments mainly in Third World countries. Castlebar Rotary assists by fund-raising and making donations to the national Rotary Foundation fund. As part of the Rotary Foundation activities Paul Harris awards are awarded by Castlebar Rotary to local individuals who have made significant contributions to the life of the local community - e.g. Dom Molloy, a local business man was honoured in 1996.
