Snugboro U-12's celebrate their victory!

On Sunday last at Milebush, Snugboro United and Castlebar Celtic ‘C’ met for the Mayo Schoolboys Under 12 Div 2 (South) League title play-off. The game promised to be a close one, as both sides had been neck and neck in the league throughout the season. In their previous league encounters, Snugboro had taken first victory, whilst Celtic had won the second.

On a wet afternoon at Milebush, this match started well for Snugboro, who took an early command of the game. Jason Ormsby was unlucky not to score in the first five minutes, when he drove over the bar from outside the box. Snugboro applied pressure at midfield and pressed the Celtic defence, forcing three corners in the early stages. These opportunities were not taken though, and allowed Celtic back into the game. Eventually, another Snugboro attack resulted in a ball being played into the goalmouth and after a failed clearance by the Celtic defence, Snugboro’s Paul Daly slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Snugboro lapsed for a while following the goal, and a Celtic attack ensued. Celtic were awarded a penalty, after one of their players was fouled by the ‘Boro keeper just inside the box, and it looked like an equaliser was on the cards. However, goalkeeper Marcus Moylette redeemed himself by saving the penalty and the rebound shot to deny Celtic. That left the score 1-0 to Snugboro at half-time.

Celtic started with renewed vigour and had the ‘Boro defence on the back foot for the earlier part of the second half, making some fine runs from midfield. Their efforts paid off when Celtic were awarded a free kick, just to the left of the Snugboro goal. A fine strike over the wall found the corner of the Snugboro net and Celtic had equalised.

The rain was not about to dampen Snugboro’s spirits though, and the team dug deep to run at the Celtic goal again. With about five minutes left, Gareth Dunne met a Celtic clearance and from about 20 yards out, struck a screamer into the bottom corner of the Celtic goal to make it - final score: Snugboro 2 - 1 Celtic.

As predicted, it had been a tight game, but Snugboro’s resolve and determination paid-off in the end. The victory was a fitting result and reward for the investment in youth development by the Snugboro club in recent years.

Snugboro Team: Marcus Moylette, Conor Helbert, Jonathon Walsh, Ronan Coyne, Aishling Towey, Niall Kerrigan, Miceal Lavelle (capt), Gareth Dunne, Sean Gormley, Jason Ormsby, Paul Daly.
