THE NORTH WESTERN REGIONAL FISHERIES BOARD

Angling Report - Week ending 21 June, 1998

River Moy

Heavy rain during the week increased the water levels and, as a result, big numbers of fish moved up through the system. Most of the fish were small grilse between 3 and

5 lbs and were mainly caught either on a spinner or a worm.

684 salmon were reported.

Heaviest fish weighing 15 lbs by Peter Anderson, Scotland.

Good bags for the week by Denis and Peggy Glass, England - 13 grilse weighing

61.25 lbs. Barney Creech, England - 10 grilse weighing 36.5 lbs. Dr. Graham Hay, England - 9 grilse weighing 40.5 lbs. Anthony Maple, England - 9 grilse, av 3lbs. Les Smith, England - 4 grilse, av 3 lbs.

Lough Conn

The fishing on this lake has gone very slow with lots of blank days reported. Fly hatches are now very localised. Good hatches of Mayflies were seen for one day outside Sandy Day and nothing for the rest of the week. The same story was reported for Poteen Island area. Evening fishing is also poor because of the cold, southerly winds. Some anglers had limited success trolling for salmon.

Because of the high water, salmon are running up the Deel and good fishing was had by a few anglers at Richmond and Carrowgarbh Bridges where approximately 30 fish were caught.

44 trout and 20 grilse were reported.

Heaviest trout, weighing 4 lbs, by Paddy Swan, Dublin, to a Grey Wulff.

Heaviest grilse, weighing 7 lbs, by John Casey, England.

Barry Lowry, England, had 5 grilse.

Eric Joumain and Christian Roes, Belgium had 3 trout - best 3 lbs.

Philip Dreaper, Offaly had 2 trout - best 3.5 lbs.

Michael Quinn, Dublin had his first trout on a fly after five years trying and then he proceeded to catch 2 more - total weight 4 lbs - a memorable day for Michael!

Lough Beltra & Newport River

A slight improvement in the fishing for this week with 7 fish taken on the river and 5 fish on the lake. Best fish on the river: 7 lbs by Philip McMasters. Best fish on the lake: 8 lbs by Jackie Deffely.
