This view from the Pontoon road on the outskirts of Castlebar shows evidence of human habitation spanning a period of twelve to thirteen centuries. On the hill overlooking the lake are two newly built modern houses of the 21st century. In the foreground the circular remains of a crannog is visible on Tucker's Lake which would have been the home of lake-dwellers in the 8th or 9th century. Traditionally, crannogs are associated with the Early Christian period when they were the secure habitation places of the more well to do people of that time. Tucker's Lake itself, probably derived its name from the Linen industry, on which Castlebar's economic wellbeing depended so much in the 18th and 19th centuries.
