The Sheela-na-Gig find at Aghagower

This photo by Noel O'Neill shows a recently discovered Sheela-na-Gig found near the ruins of a 12th-13th century church at Aghagower about nine miles west of Castlebar. These enigmatic artefacts, dating from the 12th - 17th century, are usually found at ecclesiastical sites, where it is thought, they served as a warning against the sin of lust. They are, however, also found on the walls of medieval castles where their significance is more difficult to explain.

Suggested reading: - 'Sheela-na-Gigs, Origins and Functions' by Eamonn P. Kelly (National Museum). Published by Country House in association with the National Museum of Ireland. This low-cost booklet is full of interesting illustrations and informative text.
