2003/2004
30 girls from Rang a 3 were involved in the Europeade parade which took place in Castlebar on the 26th of April. They were given a one-day workshop by Streetwise, a theatre company, where they learned dance routines for the occasion.

The pupils in 3rd and 4th class had a wonderful art experience in the Linenhall Art Centre. They saw the fascinating "Food for Thought" exhibition and then had the opportunity to express their own thoughts through the medium of art. Here are some of the end products.

OXFAM BLANKETS
We knitted blankets for the children in the 3rd world. We used the bits of wool left over from our other knitting. We didn't use white because it is a sign of death and war in the 3rd world. Each girl knitted a 6ft strip which were sewn together by our teachers mum. They will be used to keep children warm and for carrying things. We are proud to have been involved in this operation.Even though it was painstaking we were happy to make it because we knew it was for a good cause. A lady came in from the local Oxfam shop and we presented her with the blankets.

TRÓCAIRE

Every year during Lent people make a special effort to collect money for Trócaire. On Ash Wednesday, Fr. Buggy came to our school and gave us ashes. But he also talked to us about Lent and Trócaire. He left Trócaire boxes for us to take home and we put one in our classrooms. During Lent we put money in the boxes that we saved from not buying sweets. Some classes had an Easter raffle and the proceeds went into the trócaire box. Fr. Curran came to our school after Easter and we presented him with the money collected.

Some things we learnt about Trócaire.

  1. Trócaire is 30 years old this year.
  2. €15 will feed 50 children for a week in Colombia.
  3. €25 will teach a family how to grow herbs in Peru which can be used to cure illnesses.
  4. €150 will pay for a set of primary school books for 100 pupils in Somalia.

STAMPS FOR THE BLIND

St. Angelas school have collected stamps for the blind for some time now. Last month two speakers from the Association for the Blind visited the school and talked to the senior classes. Irish and foreign stamp have to be collected separately. €63 is paid for each black bag full of stamps given to the association. The stamps are sold to people who are interested in philately which is stamp collecting. It was a very interesting and informative talk.

Mission Alive
From 29th of September to 21st of October 2001 parishes and schools throughout Ireland celebrated the work of Irish missionaries. In our school classes learned about the work of missionaries and did corridor displays. Sr. Maura Walsh, a mercy nun who worked in Peru as a missionary, came to talk to the Senior classes. On 25th of October we had a Prayer Service in the school assembly hall. Some classes wrote poems, others read prayers, some children told us about their relations who worked in the missions.

This is a piece written by a 5th class girl about her uncle who worked in the missions.

My Uncle, a priest, a missionary.
My uncle is Fr. Joe Walsh. He worked in Taiwan for over 23 years. He then orked in England for 2 years. He was ordained in the Missionary Society of St. Colombian in Navan, Co. Meath. He said mass every morning in the language of Taiwan. He used to live in a shelter with other priests and when he wasn't working he used to visit schools and families. His hobbies were reading and talking to people. He came home every Easter, Christmas and St. Patrick's Day. Recently we had a visitor to our school called Fr. Chute. He and my uncle were great friends. Unfortunately in 1998 after the celebration of my uncles 25 years in the priesthood, he had a sudden heart attack in England. He died on the 27th of August 1998 and was buried in Belcarra cemetery.
My uncle is no longer alive but he did great work in the missions. May he rest in peace,Amen.

A Missionary from Peru.

Last week Sr. Maura Walsh, a Mercy sister, visited our school to talk to the 5th and 6th classes about missionaries and her life in Peru. She left Ireland in1986 to become a missionary in Peru. She is a nurse, working in the town of Lima and goes to check on people who can't reach the hospital due to illness or lack of transport. Here are some facts that she told us about Peru.

1. About 3% of the population are very wealthy, 15% are relatively comfortable, 70% are poor and the remaining 12% live in great poverty.
2. Peru has great natural wealth but the wealthy people keep it for themselves. The poor live in huts made of weaved straw, twigs or wood. Some are only made of cardboard.
3. The graveyards have hundreds or thousands of graves. The graves are marked by a simple cross with the name of the person, the date of birth and the date of death.
4. The water in Peru is unhealthy and many get skin diseases from it, mostly on their faces.
5. Tuberculosis is a very common cause of death. It rots away the lungs and sometimes even the insides.

We are glad that Sr. Maura came to talk to us because she taught us a lot about the missionaries in Peru and the injustice that exists in the world.

In September the Senior classes of St. Angela's School went to visit the Museum of Country Life which is part of the National Museum of Ireland. It opened on the 9th of September in a little village in Co. Mayo called Turlough which is about 6 miles from Castlebar. It was a very interesting visit. We saw things that were used in Ireland in the years 1850 - 1950.Some things we saw would have been used by our grandparents. There are beautiful grounds around the building. We got an activity sheet to fill in and here are some of the pictures we drew.

Seed Collection Season 2001

On the 23rd of October 2001, a man named Dale who works with the Conservation Volunteers of Ireland visited our school. He told us of the importance of trees to nature and the earth. He told us about the need to foster a greater appreciation of our native seeds and in this way increase Ireland's tree cover because presently Ireland has the lowest cover of woodland in all of Europe apart from Iceland. He also told us of the importance of seeds and fruits for the survival of birds and animals, especially in Winter.
Dale took us out through the school grounds and we collected all sorts of seeds. After that we went into the Assembly hall and planted the seeds in cut-down milk cartons which we had brought to school. Dale gave us compost and lots of advice about caring for our seeds. Now we are waiting anxiously for the signs of our new small trees. The seeds we planted included Holly,Oak, Ash, Yew, Hawthorn, Hazel, Beech, Spindle, Elder and Birch.

ESSO WILDLIFE COMPETITION

A few weeks ago we drew a picture of our favourite animal or bird for the Esso Wildlife competition. We then had to write 30 words or less about our chosen animal or bird. The most popular animal chosen was the dolphin. Other pictures done were horses, dogs, cats and birds. Last week we got certificates for taking part in the competition. I enjoyed doing it.

School Tour - Rang a 3

On the 30th of May it was the day of our school tour. We met at the Mall at 8.45. We got on the bus but then we had to get off again because it was the wrong bus. We got the other bus and soon we headed off. Near Swinford the bus stopped. We got out and went into the petrol station and it had a shop so we could buy things. Eventually two smaller buses came along. our class went on one and the other 3rd class went on the other. Ms. J. and Mrs. Mc M. came with us. Sadly by now we were too late to go Sligo Folk Park so we went to a playground in Enniscrone instead. It had crazy golf and we had fun playing there. There were slides and wheelbarrows and a ship to play on too. While we in the playground the other class went to the shops in Ballina. They joined us in the playground but they didn't stay too long because we had to go to Waterpoint. There were 2 pools, a big one and a small one. there was a big slide and it went outside. We had great fun swimming. Two of the teachers came into the pool with us. Then we had our lunch and after that we bought some things in the shop in Waterpoint. On the way home we sang songs. We got home at 5 o' clock. It was a wonderful day.

Ar an 30ú lá de mí Bealtaine chuamar ar turas scoile go Bunratty Castle, Ailwee caves agus Craggaunowen. Bhain mé an taitneamh as.
D'eirigh mé ar a sé a chlog. Chuir mé mo chuid éadaigh orm.D'ith mé mo bhricfeasta. Nigh mé m'aghaidh agus mo lámha agus scuab mé mo fhiacaile.Chior mé mo chuid gruaige. Bhí áthas an domhain orm.
Thiomáin Mamaí liom go dtí an Mall. Shuigh mé in aice le Amanda, Tara agus Shauna. Tar éis cúpla uair shroich an bus na Caves. D'itheamar ár lón .Thóg mé mo ceamara agus chuamar isteach sa phluais. Bhí sé an dorcha agus an fhliuch ach ní raibh eagla orm.
Nuair a tháinig an rang amach chuamar go dtí an Caisleán Bunratty. D'inis bean scealta dúinn faoin gcaisleán. Chonaic mé na seomraí codlata agus a lán rudaí eile. Ansin shiúl mé timpeall an baile. Cheannaigh mé bronntanais do mo chlann agus cheannaigh mé lireacán dom féin.
Ar a leathuair tar éis a trí chuamar go dtí Cragganowen. Chonaic mé crannóg,ringfort, collach agus bád Naomh Breandán. D'itheamar lón arís.
Chuamar abhaile ar a leathuair tar éis a sé. Shroicheamar Caisleán a' Bharraigh ar leathuair tar éis a hocht.Thug mé na bronntanais do mo chlann agus bhí siad an sásta leo.

School tour - 1st Class

We went on our school tour on Thursday 30th of May. We met at the Mall at half past 9. The 2 first classes went together with our teachers and some other teachers came too.We had to bring our lunch. We were going to Tureo Pet Farm on County Galway. It was a long journey but soon we got there. We saw lots of animals like ponies, sheep, goats, donkeys, rabbits, peacocks and ducks. We were allowed to feed some of the animals. Then we had our lunch. There was a shop and we bought things like pencils. There was a playground inside with slides and a ball pond. We had great fun there. Then it was time to go home. It was 4 o' clock when we got back to Castlebar. Our parents were waiting for us. We were tired after the day .

School Tour - 2nd Class

The two 2nd classes went to the National Aquarium in Galway. We left Castlebar at 9.30. Our teachers came and 3 extra teachers came too. It took about an hour to get to Galway. When we entered the aquarium the first thing we noticed was a big tank. We got a shock because a big wave crashed into the tank. We learned that this happens because the fish in this tank - sea bass - are used to living in water with waves. Our guide brought us on a tour of the aquarium where we saw and learned lots of things. We saw a wide shallow pool, which was full of many types of flat fish like the Thornback Rays, Halibut, plaice and Turbot. We were allowed to put our hands in the water and touch some of these fish. In some of the other tanks we saw conger eels, whiting and rocklings. There were lots of different types of crabs also. We also learned that the salmon can live in fresh water as well as in seawater. We saw a baby shark. We heard the life story of the salmon. Some girls took photos of the fish. Then we had our lunch. After that we went on a boat trip on the river Corrib. We were allowed to upstairs on the boat. The teachers were dancing on the boat. We had great fun. We came home at 4.30.

The girl's from Scoil Naomh Aingeal took part in the Pioneer Quiz which was held in Davitt College on February 22nd 2002.They won 1st place with 91 out of 100. They go forward to the Regional Final to be held in Ballinrobe on 6th of April.

3rd class Inventors!

We had a student teacher for 4 weeks. She taught us lots of things. For art we made glasses. First we designed them on paper. Then we decided what materials we wanted to use to make the glasses. We used different kinds of paper, all colours. We used glue and sellotape. We used tin foil, plastic, ribbon, feathers, glitter and other things. When we had them finished we had a fashion show. Some girls made really cool glasses. we enjoyed making them and our teacher took some photos while we were making the glasses. She also took some of the fashion show.

Here are some fables done by Rang a 4 and beautifully illustrated.

The Hare and the Tortoise.
This fable is about a hare and a tortoise. So one dy the hare and the tortoise were having a conversation about who was the fastest at running. Then the hare said to the tortoise do you want a race. He said yes. Then he said I bet I can beat you the tortoise said. No you can't said the hare. So they had a race and the hare got off to a good start. Near to the end where the finishing line was he decided to take a rest until the tortoise caught up. Then the hare fell asleep. Eventually the tortoise caught up and the tortoise won and the hare was very angry.

The Moral is......Slow and steady can win the race.
By Katie C.

The Greedy Fox.
One day two shepherds were going hiding the food for the sheep in a tree hole. There was a fox and he was watching them. So when they would go he would be able to find the food and eat it. The food was hidden in a narrow hole in another tree. The tree hole was so small and narrow that the fox had to go sideways to fit in the hole. When he got in he sat down.He ate the food until he ahd enough. Then he went to get out of the hole but he was too fat. He sat back down and started to moan. Then his friend came along and said he would have to wait until he was thinner. So he did.

The Moral: We should think before we act.
By Aisling H.

A Man and his Sons.

There was once a man who had sons that would not stop quarrelling. He got tired of them quarrelling so he got five sticks and tied them together. Then he let each son try to break them. But they could not.So he gave each one a stick and they broke it and they learnt that if you stick together you will not break. They never fought again.
The Moral : United we stand, divided we fall.
By Tara O'M.
The Town Mouse and Country Mouse.
Once upon a time there was a country mouse and a town mouse. The country mouse was sad because he saw the town mouse leaving. The town mouse was just about to leave when the door swung open. "Quickly come in here" said the town mouse to the country mouse. They just got in without anyone noticing them. after a while they went out of the hole and came into another room to get the train. Just then another door swung open."Quickly come in here" said the town mouse again. Then they finally got to the train station but they missed the train. Then they went home and slept the night. The next morning they got the train and the country mouse waved goodbye. Then he went home saying " Our own home always seems tne best to us"
