Ribena Soccer

Fifth Class on a local History walk around the streets of Castlebar with guide Ernie Sweeney. The Imperial Hotel kindly allowed the tours into their very historic wood panelled dining room.

The Ribena National finals were held in Navan. The four teams one from each province, were Moyross from Cork, Scoil Iosagáin from Donegal and St. Lorcans from Dublin and ourselves, St. Patrick's from Castlebar.

We started off with facing the Munster champions. The starting team was Danny Kirby, Conor Griffin, David Stenson, Philip Redmond and Steven Fitzgerald. The subs were Peter Lyons, Jack Murray and Nigel Naughton. In the first five mins, Redmond took the ball and ran on and hit the back of the net. Then after half time Munster scored a goal. Five mins after that Fitzgerald sent a cracker to the top corner. The match ended 2-1.

The second match was against the Leinster side. The starting line up was the same. After a mistake from Pats, Dublin took an early lead. Danny Kirby tried his best but the Dublin side was just to strong, but golden balls Griffin had a great game at the back along with Davie Stens magnificent goal. Over all the team did their best. The score was 4-1.

Last St Pats played the Ulster team. Peter Lyons scored a brilliant header, which left the keeper stranded. A few mins after that Nigel Naughton got round two players and slotted the ball in the back of the net. Ulster had a chance but superman Kirby saved it. Griffin got the ball and played a one two with Peter, and shot inches past the post. Jack Murray had a great game with a few shots just wide. Mr. Canning and Mr. Culhane were doing a bit of a dance on the sideline. Lyons ended up a hat-trick hero. Danny was going mad in goal for some action so he switched with Steven in goal. After a minute Danny scored a great goal. Nigel bagged the last goal. Philip played a great game but he thought he was playing Gaelic at one point in the game. In fact the whole team played magnificent. The score was 6-0 to Pats. St. Pats finished second in Ireland

History of our Town
In November of last year Mr.Waldron's 6th class put together a project about the history of our town. The project included pieces about the church written by Conor Griffin, the Jail by Paul Regan and Liam Martin and the Coat of Arms by James Connor. And other smaller projects by every other member of the class on the streets of Castlebar.
Some of the more interesting facts from the main pieces of the project were that the Church was opened in October of 1901.There were only three executions in Castlebar Jail names of these three men were J.Gildea, Owen Brogan and Edward Walsh. Gildea and Brogan were hung in public, but after public executions were banned in 1868, Walsh was executed inside the jail; a black flag was raised over the jail to show that it was a successful execution. Little did we know? That just down the road from our school that people were hung on Gallows Hill, and that gave Mr.Waldron some ideas about a few of us!    By James Connor and Brian Byrne

N.Y.P. (Neighbourhood Youth Project)

The N.Y.P. is a cool place to do things.
We play games like pool .We go on trips.
It is across from St. Angelas. It is not far from the School .
There is a group for girls and a group for boys . The group started when my sister was sixteen. Now she is eighteen, this is how I know about the N.Y.P.
When I was ten my sister told me about the N.Y.P. I went to the N.Y.P. to get a form. Two weeks after they gave me a form. My Mum had to sign it to let me go to the N.Y.P. It was good fun .We went to Galway.
We slept in a hostel for a night .We went canoeing and kayaking. It was great fun . When it was over we went home.We got home at 6 o clock.
The next day we were at the last group for the Summer .
We went to the Bowling Alley. After all that I bet you would like to join the N.Y.P.

Symphony Kitchens gave us the opportunity to design our very own model kitchen. Ms. Grady's fifth class  took on the challenge of designing and making our model kitchen. We used a variety of materials which included lollipop sticks, matches, card and fabric. The team was split into two groups. The boys used their imagination to the best of their ability in coming up with clever ideas such as wooden flooring made out of lollipop sticks. We used spraypaint on some objects to give them a chrome effect. It took us three hours in total to construct and we fount it a very worthwhile experience. We hope to win the first prize of a Dell computer but even if we don't it was great fun working on the kitchen.
