A little experiment that has been done many times before and especially since the advent of online translation. I know it's a cheap shot but it is great fun.
Rudolph as your in such a way shining nose, you will lead mine sleigh this evening?

So how good is Google at tackling a simple piece of English that any four year old knows off by heart? Well not too bad as long as you are not translating anything important like the instructions on how to cook your Christmas turkey.

So this Sunday afternoon – after coming home from Mass in St. Mary’s next to the hospital where the microphone system seemed to have taken on a life of its own in opposition to Fr. Buggy and after listening to the breaking news that Saddam Hussein had been captured – I put Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer to the test. Google has a very useful multilingual translating facility which allows you to cut and paste text into its translation box and get the result back an instant later. Magical stuff indeed and it definitely makes the mind boggle at the speed.

Your mind may also be boggled at some of the results! Mountain ranges, smelly pensioners and I've heard of flying by wire but a hardwired Rudolph? First the original and then some samples.

Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer:

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say,
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?

Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee,
"Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer,
You'll go down in history!

Silent Night was originally a German song. So what does Google make of it when the German is translated into English?

Satisfies night!  Heil'ge night!  Everything sleeps;  lonely only trusted highly holy pair is awake.  Holder Knab ' in the lockigten hair, sleeps in more himmlischer rests! sleeps in more himmlischer rests!

(Just in case here is the English version: Silent night Holy night, All is calm all is bright, 'Round yon virgin Mother and Child, Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace
)

And what was that you ask?

Oh! You better watch out,
You better not cry,
You better not pout,
I'm telling you why:

Santa Claus is coming to town!

He's making a list,
He's checking it twice,
