Northwest Angling Report for 27 August 2006

River Moy

With the Moy at its lowest level since 1995, angling proved very difficult over the past week. Of the 152 salmon reported this week, 107 were taken on the Moy Fishery tidal beats. The total salmon catch for the year to date has now reached 6,293 fish.

On the Ridge Pool, Gerry Heaslip, Dublin, and Michael Whelan, Offaly, had a fish each on the fly. The Cathedral Beat continued to fish well with 55 salmon caught for the week. John O’ Neill, Newry, had a fine 6.5 lbs grilse on fly. On the Spring Wells, juvenile angler Sean Lavery had a 4 lbs fish spinning and Padge Reilly, Ardee had a nice 6.3 lbs fish on fly. The Ash Tree Pool produced 12 salmon with William Boles, Tipperary taking 2 on fly with his best fish weighing 5 lbs.

On the Coolcronan Fishery, 12 year old Raef and Stafford Tyrell had a fish each fishing the worm. Nick Donnelly, England fishing the Foxford Fishery had 3 salmon while Oliver Copling, England, fishing Byrne’s water had 2 fish.

Moy Estuary

Sea trout fishing on the Moy Estuary continued to improve during the week with anglers fishing with Judd Ruane taking 38 trout.

Easkey Fortland Fishery

The fishery reported 17 Salmon for the week where Robert Kingston and his 11 year old son enjoyed excellent salmon fishing.

Burrishoole Fishery

Anglers enjoyed excellent fishing in Burrishoole with 22 salmon for the week including 14 ranched fish and 8 wild fish which were released. Stephen Bird and David Rogers, Lisburn had 5 salmon. Tim Aldis, UK also had 5 salmon with his best fish weighing in at 4.5 lbs. A number of local anglers also had fish, the best of which at 4.9 lbs came to Brian Hope.

Owenmore System

There have been good signs of fish reported from the Owenmore River where 14 salmon were reported for the week, many of which were released. Angling has been quiet on Carrowmore Lake but, with fresh water expected, angling should improve considerably in the coming week.

Lough Beltra/Newport River

A number of anglers fished the river for the week and a number of sea trout were caught all of which were released.

Ballinlough Fishery

Angling has been slow on the lake over the past week. However, local angler Tom Davin caught 2 trout best fish 1.75 lbs and Ray Broughton, Newport Angling Club, caught 1 trout for 1.5 lbs. There were also reports of a fine rainbow having been lost. Best flies included Bibios, Nymphs and Daddy Long Legs.

Glenamoy River

As with the Owenmore River, anglers have reported good signs of fish in this river where the first fish of the season came to Pat Murphy, Dublin, who also reported losing another.

Ballisodare River

The Ballisodare Fishery reported 74 salmon over the last week. Best fish came to Brian McDonagh who landed a fine 15 lbs salmon fishing the worm. Anglers have also reported that the river contains a lot of fish and should provide good sport to anglers fishing catch and release form 1 September.

Bonet River

Anglers reported 11 salmon over the past 10 days. Local juvenile angler, Paul Kelly from Dromahair had a great week with 3 salmon, his best weighing in at 8 lbs.

Drumcliffe/Glencar System

There is a good show of fish at present in the Drumcliffe River with 4 salmon reported over the last few days, including Johnny Lockney, Sligo who had 3 fish on the worm. Matt Lyons, Sligo fly fishing on Glencar Lake, caught a nice 6 lbs salmon.

Lough Conn

Despite unfavourable conditions and water levels at their lowest for many years, a number of anglers were rewarded with some very good catches over the last week. Barry and Gerry Fox, Sligo had eight trout ranging between 1 and 1.5 lbs all of which were released. Paul Smyth and friend, England had 5 trout for 7 lbs, with a best fish of 2.25 lbs. Lawson Clements, Sligo and Michael Hynes, Dublin had 6 trout with best fish 2.5 lbs. Their most successful flies were Melvin Octopus, Green Peter and Daddy Long Legs. A visiting Swiss couple reported excellent fishing during their week on Conn, fishing fry patterns, and returned all fish. Charles Richmond and Owen Lewis, UK had good sport over the weekend with 10 trout, their best fish being 2 lbs and all were returned. In addition to the patterns mentioned above, other flies favoured during the week included Black Pennell, Connemara Black, Bibio and Olive patterns.

Important Notice for Salmon Anglers

Effective from 1 September, 2006, catch and release is mandatory in the Sligo Fishery District and anglers must only use single barbless hooks. The use of worms as bait is also prohibited and anglers must retain 1 tag to fish. The Sligo Fishery District includes all water bodies and estuaries flowing into the sea between Bunowna Point (immediately east of the Easky River estuary) to Mullaghmore Head.

Anglers are also advised that the bag limit in the Ballina and Bangor Fishery Districts is 1 fish per day from 1 September, 2006 and anglers fishing on after killing a fish in these districts must practice catch and release.
