The River Moy in Foxford

River Moy
The water levels continued to drop early on in the week which resulted in good fishing in all fisheries above Ballina and exceptional fishing reported in the Foxford area.
Heavy rain has the river in flood again and it will be a few days before it clears and begins to drop.
Good numbers of fish, mainly grilse, are going through and with the dirty water Pontoon Bridge is a popular spot where many fish are being caught.
268 salmon were reported for the week.
A Kildare angler had heaviest fish weighing 16lbs.
George Henson and Jane Ellis from Tamworth in England enjoyed a brilliant week’s fishing in the Foxford area when they caught 6 salmon best fish 9.5lbs.
Granville Nesbitt Ballina had two fish weighing 14.5 and 14lbs.
Red John Coleman Foxford assisted two of his friends to catch 3 salmon between 14 and 15lbs.
John Borrow Wales had one fish weighing 13.5lbs.
Paul Ainwright Cheshire had 2 salmon weighing 13.5 and 12lbs.
The Jacques Pierre party of four from France had 17 fish for the week best fish 14.5lbs.


Moy Estuary

There was excellent sea-trout fishing on the estuary with trout to over 3lbs being caught on mackerel strips and flies.
Pat Fagan, Mullingar, and two friends had 9 sea-trout, best 3.25lbs.
Christopher and Gary McCausland Belfast had good fishing with fish to 2.5lbs.
Duncan McKenzie and Adrian Ovens England also had good fishing with trout to 2.5lbs.


Lough Conn

Good hatches of Mayfly for most of the week and some great fishing early on in the week but, towards the weekend, it became very poor indeed.
The water level is still dropping and if the weather settled and the winds dropped we could expect some good fishing again, especially spent fishing in the evenings.
A total of 500 trout reported for the week
Heaviest trout: weighing 4.16lbs. caught by John Burke, Ballina, closely followed By Fechin McMorrow, Collooney, with a fish of 4.11lbs.
The Baldwin group from Cantebury England had 8 trout up to 2lbs.
Dave Passmore group had 6 fish up to 3lbs.
The Mark Arnold group had good fishing with fish up to 2.5lbs.
Gerry Keating Cork and Michael Moclair Tipperary had good fishing with fish up to 2lbs.
Carl Fertig and son from Germany had 8 trout to 3lbs. and one salmon 4lbs.
Chris Wathen England had 5 trout best 3lbs. all on a Royal Wulff.
The Annual Inter-Board competition between the North Western and Western Fishery Boards was held on Tuesday May 27th.
The fishing was difficult and the result was very close with the North Western Board coming out on top for the first time in nine years with 20 fish weighing 33.27lbs.
The Western Board had a catch of 23 fish weighing 33.24lbs.
48 anglers took part.
Winner: John Burke NWRFB with 4 fish weighing 10.64lbs.
Second: Frank Reilly WRFB with 3 fish weighing 5.37lbs.
Third: Pat Gorman WRFB with 3 fish weighing 4.94lbs.
The Annual Garda competition was held on Wednesday 28th. May.
Winner: Seamus Kelly Galway with 5 trout weighing 8lbs.
Lough Conn & Cullin Anglers held a two day competition on Saturday and Sunday.
84 anglers over 2 days caught 40 trout weighing 67.52lbs.
Winner: Cyril Murray Galway with 3 fish weighing 5.35lbs.
Second: Denis Goulding Dublin with 3 fish weighing 5.25lbs.
Third: Joe Creane Roundstone with 3 fish weighing 5.18lbs.
Heaviest fish weighing 4.11lbs. by Fechin McMorrow Collooney.


Lough Conn at Knockmore


Lough Arrow

The mayfly hatch was very poor this year but there were some evenings when the spent went out and a privileged few enjoyed good sport.
Peter Dunne had 5 fish best 4lbs. on spent.
Micky Gunning had 4 fish best 3lbs.
Noel Fairbanks had 5 fish best 4.25lbs.
Leslie Frazer and Frank Donlon both had fish of 3.5lbs.


Lough Bo

8 trout reported.
Heaviest fish weighing 2lbs. caught by Michael Gorman.
David Aird had 3 fish best 1.75lbs.


Lough Nasool

27 trout reported.
Thomas Higgins had 7 trout best fish 2.5lbs.
Paul Brennan had 5 trout best fish 2.5lbs.Kevin Flynn had 3 fish best 1.75lbs.


Lough Doon

Good fishing to olives and sedges for the past two weeks with 40 trout reported caught.
Best fish 1.5lbs. This small lough, convenient to Sligo town and Dromahair, Co. Leitrim, holds an excellent stock of free rising wild brown trout. For permits and boat hire, contact Mrs. Martin, adjacent to the lough – tel. 071-64989


Bonet River

27 fish caught so far this year with the bulk of these in recent weeks..
Heaviest fish James Conlon weighing 16lbs.


Ballysadare River

145 salmon caught this season with already 500 salmon gone through the counter at Ballysadare..


Garravogue River

13 salmon reported caught.
Heaviest fish 17lbs. by Kevin Conlon.

Lough Beltra


Lough Beltra

4 salmon caught for the week.
Heaviest fish weighing 9.5lbs. caught by Gillian Elwood England.
Steven Bolton England had one fish 9lbs.
Sean Dolan had one fish 8lbs.
Dr. Cahill had one fish 7.5lbs.


Newport River

Oliver Corcoran, Newport, had 1 fish weighing 13.07lbs.
