River Moy

The Moy system produced 25 salmon for the week with 9 of these reported from Pontoon Bridge. The Ballina Salmon Anglers’ water produced 3 ranging from 5 lbs. to 11 lbs. and all taken on worm. The East Mayo Anglers’ water had a good week with 11 salmon recorded. Erwin Dewald, Foxford, had one weighing 9 lbs., on the fly, and most of the others were caught spinning. Robert Gillespie had one at 8 lbs., Jerry Deane, Castelbar, had a fine fish weighing 14 lbs. and Kieran Reed, Bohola, also had a 14 lbs. fish on a spinner. However, the best salmon recorded on the Moy this season, so far, fell to Aiden Quinn, Athlone, who landed 18 lbs. fish which also took a spinner. On Cloongee Fishery, Norman Hagan, Bangor, Co. Down, caught a 10 lbs. salmon on the worm.

Permits for Cloongee are available from Tiernan Brothers Angling Centre on Main St., Foxford. Free fishing continues on the Ridge Pool until the first salmon is caught.

Lough Conn

There were mixed reports from Lough Conn this week with some anglers enjoying good fishing and others not faring as well. Stephen Browne had three ranging from .75 lbs. to 1 lb and all were returned. Sean Crean and Keith Moyles had seven, all around 1.5 lbs., and most were returned. John Walshe and Mick Russell had eight trout up to 1.5 lbs. all of which were returned. Aidan Heffernan and Joe Quinn had seven and David Dinsmore, Lahardaun, and Peter Stewart Stafford, UK, had two weighing 1 lb and 1.5 lbs. Frank Reilly and partner also had a good day with seven trout caught and most returned. Trout were taken on duckfly patterns and nymphs as well as on Bibios, Green Peters, Zulus and a variety of other, usual wet flies. It is very encouraging to see so many anglers on Conn adopting an enlightened conservation policy with many trout are being returned to the lake each week. This will, no doubt, assist the recovery of trout stocks in the lake.

Lough Cullin

There were hatches of duck fly on Cullin and a number of anglers fished the lake but reports were difficult to obtain.

Lough Arrow

The season opened on Lough Arrow on 1 April and a number of trout were recorded. Darren Gray had a fine trout of 5 lbs. John McDermott Roe had one weighing 4 lbs. and Jonathon Frazer had one at 1.5 lbs. Two junior anglers also scored in the opening days of the season. Walter Frazer had a trout of 1.5 lbs. and Thomas Lavin had one at 1.75 lbs.

Lough Gill

Lough Gill produced two salmon for the week. Maurice McCaffrey had on weighing 9 lbs. and Noel Roddy had one at 12 lbs.

Lough Bo

Thomas Higgins had 4 trout with the heaviest weighing 2.5 lbs. John Cryan, Kevin Cogan and Kevin Dowler each had two trout.

Lough Nasool

Padraic McKeon had three trout, each around 1 lb. Luke Connell had two at about .75 lbs. each.
