The North Western Regional Fisheries Board in association with Recreational Angling Ireland held their second Juvenile anglers event on the Moy Fishery’s Cathedral beat last Thursday, 10 August. The day, which was hosted by the Board and sponsored by RAI proved to be very productive with a total of 21 salmon caught by 56 enthusiastic young anglers both local and visiting. This event is one of many which are held throughout the region as part of the Board’s policy to promote angling for young people.

Landing the Fish

To facilitate the large number of participants, each individual was allotted a one hour slot on one of the Cathedral beat’s eight groynes. After the hour had elapsed, another group commenced angling. This process was repeated on a rota basis throughout the day.

Fishing commenced at 10 am just as the large tide receded from the beat and within a short time local angler Alan Keane had a salmon of 2 lbs 12 oz on a worm. In the next session, brothers Jack and Luke Doherty under the tuition of their father, well known local angling figure, Eddie, had three fish between them. While at the top end of the beat Nigel Donnelly had 2 and cousins Niamh Finnerty and Killian Harte also had one each.

As the day progressed, it became clear that the salmon were on and that the day would produce excellent catches. Local angler John Keaveny had three salmon for 6 lbs which earned him first place on the day while Irene Tiernan coached by her father Michael, another well known angling figure from Foxford, caught two lovely fish and lost another two, putting her in second place.

In the next session, Tony Mc Dermott had one nice salmon of 3 lbs 11 oz which was the best fish of the day and also put him in 5th place overall. In total 15 of the 56 participants caught 21 salmon for the day
