Club Computer Training
A training session will be held for the 50 clubs and organisation who received computers under the Computers for Clubs Information Age Town Project at the TF on Saturday 5 Dec and Sat 12 Dec from 11:00 to 13:00. It is not necessary to bring a computer. Hopefully those coming will bring samples of web pages in preparation. The idea is to discuss and solve any hardware, software or other problems that people have encountered since receiving their computers. At the end of the two sessions attendees should be well capable of producing simple but effective web pages. The results of their efforts will be then be uploaded to the Castlebar domain!

Bits and Bobs
The Hoechstadt-Castlebar chat linkup went very well on Tuesday evening. Lots of German English and Irish phrases flying back and forward with multiple conversations going simultaneously. The Information Age Centre on Ellison Street was jammed with chatters queuing up for the keyboards to talk to Hoechstadt our German twins. Perhaps we'll put up our own Castlebar dot ie chat room - we have the software if anyone is interested - perhaps we could start a once a week effort?

On Tuesday evening also, Castlebar Rotary presented a £10,000 cheque for the people of Omagh. The money will be used specifically for limb replacements. In spite of all the publicity and sympathy for Omagh, only some £800,000 has been donated so far to the major fund aimed at putting Omagh back on its feet again. This is considerably short of the initial multi-million estimates. All but three of the injured are now out of hospital. The main road opened again last week for traffic for the first time since the bomb in August and businesses are now trying to re-establish themselves as they were very seriously affected in the months since August because people actively avoided Omagh since August.

The Hospice fund-raiser fair in the Failte Suite of the Welcome in raised some £3000 on Sunday last. A really terrific turnout for a great cause and a very enjoyable event.

A new large capacity four screen cinema is due to open in Castlebar on Thursday week bringing the number of screens in Castlebar to seven.

Oh yes - Ennis has just gone on line! We have been pinging their blank page for the last few weeks on our Internet Traffic Report but now you can have a look at the real thing. Tell us what you think.

Castlebar Chamber of Commerce was one of a number of Irish chambers of commerce represented on Monday at a Demarche Project progress report on e-commerce held in Brussels. Other Irish chambers present were Cork, Wexford, Limerick, Dublin. The Castlebar Electronic Commerce Centre appears to be well up there in terms of trying to develop electronic commerce for SMEs in their area - ahead of the posse in some respects. Further developments on this front are anticipated in the near future.

We thank a number of people who have forwarded information for web sites on this domain - we will be putting them up over the next few days. Remember that we are committed to providing a free web site for every business and organisation in Castlebar in order to provide a comprehensive source of information about Castlebar.

Castlebar from Space
Have a look at some of these images picked up last week from satellites which provide views of Ireland directly over Castlebar. Who says the world is flat?

From Greenland to North Africa from mid-Atlantic to Finland

Closer up at about 4 pm - it was still reasonably bright in Castlebar but the lights are on further east.

Castlebar from way up there! - The US is obviously still in bed here - proving once again that we in Europe are way ahead of them!

Turlough House in 1914

Turlough House 1914 (117k)
Peter MITCHELL in Australia sends a photograph of Turlough House which accompanied a letter, dated 15 January 1914, sent by Jacob BECKETT of Spencer Park. Below we have a photograph taken in 1985 for comparison. The lake no longer exists although there is talk of restoring it as part of Folk Life Project earmarked for Turlough House.

Turlough House 1985 (42k)
Peter is keen to discover more about Jacob Beckett whose wife (nee Braithwaite) died in 1914 and her death was written up in the local press - presumably the Connaught Telegraph. The Beckett family lived on the old Spencer Park Estate.
Can anyone enlighten Peter further regarding details of the Beckett family? The story is even more interesting in that in our roots guestbook we also have a Cameron Eppler who is a grandson of a Ronald Carey Beckett, a brother of a Jacob Beckett, also of Spencer Park - Cameron informs us that the Beckett family were the owners of Spencer Park Estate.

Castlebar e-Commerce Centre
Check out the special electronic commerce section on the Castlebar Internet domain. e-Commerce is certainly the buzzword of late 1998. Find out a bit more by checking out the Castlebar e-Commerce Centre
We take e-Commerce to include a wide range of activities such as:

Simple listings and advertising on web pages such as the Castlebar directories
More expansive web sites with detailed product information and customer services
Interactive services for customers and feedback of valuable marketing information
Electronic trading where payment is made by credit card over the web on a secure server such as the Castlebar Domain's secure server.

This is a new and expanding area and it is difficult for many companies to appreciate both the opportunities and the competitive threats posed by the growth of e-commerce. The Castlebar Internet Domain will attempt to give Castlebar traders a first hand idea of what is possible today by offering some free services and demonstrations of electronic commerce in action. At present the Centre's activities include:

The Castlebar e-Commerce Centre offers free 100-word upgrades to the listings of Castlebar businesses and organisations already listed in our business directories. These will be placed in an individual web site for each company. You may enter your details using our web page generator and then save the web page file and e-mail to info@castlebar.ie

We are setting up a register of Affiliate Companies for Castlebar-based companies and individuals who can provide Internet services such as web page design.

We want to stimulate Castlebar people to start thinking about the commercial possibilities of selling goods and services on the Internet from Castlebar.

We offer a consultancy service to Castlebar businesses and individuals who would like to go into a bit more detail.

Examples and Castlebar case histories are also included from time to time

We have already included a demonstration web shop selling books.
