European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) Training CD-ROMS

The Castlebar Information Age Town Project has purchased a large number of ECDL training CD-ROMs which will be made available to people in Castlebar from Wednesday 16 December 1998 from Castlebar Chamber of Commerce, New Antrim Street. An initial charge of £45 will be made of which £40 will be refunded when the disk is returned. Remember that these computer-based-training disks normally cost well in excess of £100. Club Computer Training
Training sessions will continue for the 50 clubs and organisation who received computers under the Computers for Clubs Information Age Town Project at the TF on Saturday 12 Dec from 11:00 to 13:00. It is not necessary to bring a computer. Hopefully those coming will bring samples of web pages in preparation. The idea is to discuss and solve any hardware, software or other problems that people have encountered since receiving their computers. At the end of the two sessions attendees should be well capable of producing simple but effective web pages. The results of their efforts will be then be uploaded to the Castlebar domain!

Castlebar Chamber of Commerce was one of a number of Irish chambers of commerce represented on Monday at a Demarche Project progress report on e-commerce held in Brussels. Other Irish chambers present were Cork, Wexford, Limerick, Dublin. The Castlebar Electronic Commerce Centre appears to be well up there in terms of trying to develop electronic commerce for SMEs in their area - ahead of the posse in some respects. Further developments on this front are anticipated in the near future.

We thank a number of people who have forwarded information for web sites on this domain - we will be putting them up over the next few days. Remember that we are committed to providing a free web site for every business and organisation in Castlebar in order to provide a comprehensive source of information about Castlebar.

We take e-Commerce to include a wide range of activities such as:


Simple listings and advertising on web pages such as the Castlebar directories
More expansive web sites with detailed product information and customer services
Interactive services for customers and feedback of valuable marketing information
Electronic trading where payment is made by credit card over the web on a secure server such as the Castlebar Domain's secure server.


This is a new and expanding area and it is difficult for many companies to appreciate both the opportunities and the competitive threats posed by the growth of e-commerce. The Castlebar Internet Domain will attempt to give Castlebar traders a first hand idea of what is possible today by offering some free services and demonstrations of electronic commerce in action. At present the Centre's activities include:


The Castlebar e-Commerce Centre offers free 100-word upgrades to the listings of Castlebar businesses and organisations already listed in our business directories. These will be placed in an individual web site for each company. You may enter your details using our web page generator and then save the web page file and e-mail to info@castlebar.ie

We are setting up a register of Affiliate Companies for Castlebar-based companies and individuals who can provide Internet services such as web page design.

We want to stimulate Castlebar people to start thinking about the commercial possibilities of selling goods and services on the Internet from Castlebar.

We offer a consultancy service to Castlebar businesses and individuals who would like to go into a bit more detail.
