Mogli, you seem to be perpetuating an untruth! I've been told on good authority that the assault did NOT take place in the fast food outlet (despite what some newspapers say). The initial verbal taunts may have started there but the assault took place elsewhere.
I was not amused to read in the local paper reporting this incident that the Gardai informed the Town Council recently that crime rates are falling in Castlebar!
And who's to blame? Surely its the drunken louts who engage in such assaults that are responsible. If all the pubs and all the fast food outlets were closed at ten o'clock you would still have these same people crazed with drink/drugs stalking the streets and terrorising innocent people, What beats me is how the Guards allowed the thugs to take over the streets in the space of a couple of years without as much as a whimper. Is it not time for a simple law (that they seem to have in most countries) whereby anyone involved in such behaviour is left for a couple of days in the cells of the local police station without recourse to prison? I believe this would stop a lot of this drink-induced bravado.
