Paddy Philbin had a pub in Spencer Street; later owned by Mrs. McHugh, a brother of Martin Browne, Main Street. Married a man named Gilligan, a Department official in the bacon factory. Bernie Reilly, had a pub, the Green Olive, later on. Paddy King came from Hollyhill and was involved in the McHale Park development with Gerry McDonald and Sam McCormack. May have been treasurer of the committee. Michael Ainsworth and John Moran also traded there. Now owned by Pat Moran. Mrs. Rattigan had a pub in Spencer Street, later owned by Jack Reilly and family, now the property of Willie Cosgrove and run by Michael Kilcoyne. The original owners of Tolsters pub were a family named Taylors. Later owned by Paddy Ketterick, Paddy O'Donnell, Ballyheane, Jim Kelly, a native of Killawalla, the Connolly family and now Gerry Tolster. Shortts was originally owned by Michael Geraghty, had a son, Brendan, I think, and a daughter named Mary. Other owners were Padraig Hughes and the Mitchell family. The original owner of Rattigans was a man named Fred Fogarty, also owned Shorrts, probably over seventy years ago. Rattigans also owned a pub in Castle Street ('no cheques too big, no cheques too small, tons of cash to pay them all' . . . remember the slogan). There were two brothers, Jim and Pat Rattigan. There was a another pub owned by a man named Pat Muldoon, popularly known as 'Nudloom Tap's.' Remember the Geraghty sisters who sold Irish sweepstake tickets in what is now Tom Campbell's photographic studio. Some of the above info may be subject to correction, the Spencer Street scene has changed so much over the years.
