Where is the evidence that the river ever followed a course other than it`s present one ? The 1837 map shows it`s present course. It flows from the cut at Lough Lannagh following a natural course between the higher ground of Chapel St and Main St. The brewery and distillery are located adjacent to the river for the required water supply. Most settlements grew around rivers. For the river to have flowed from the lake to the vicinity of Castle St the topography of the area would have had to be dramatically different and subsequent rerouting would have required massive earthworks. All for what purpose in 18th or previous century . before ?
